Most people never think about the switchboard until it stops cooperating. A breaker that will not stay on. A faint plastic smell near the meter box. A Two Minute Check At Your Meter Box
Open the panel and look for these, in this order:
- Ceramic fuses with fuse wire wrapped around a screw, which means the board predates modern protection by decades.
- No safety switches, so no test buttons and no earth leakage protection on your circuits.
- Every slot filled, with nowhere to add another circuit.
- Warmth, buzzing or a scorched smell when the air conditioner starts up.
- Cracked bakelite, brown staining, or a door that no longer closes properly.
Two or more of those together should be treated as a booking rather than a maybe. One on its own still deserves a look, particularly the burning smell.
Do I Need A New Switchboard, Or Just A Repair?
Not every board needs replacing. A board with modern breakers and spare capacity can often take an added circuit or an extra safety switch without any drama, and that is a short job.
The dividing line is capacity and compliance. If the board is full, or if bringing it up to current standards means replacing most of what sits inside it anyway, a single upgrade is the cheaper path. Staged repairs on a board that is already at its limit tend to buy months, not years.
A switchboard rarely fails all at once. It gives you small warnings for months, then picks the hottest afternoon of the year to stop giving them.
The Solar, Battery And EV Trigger Most Owners Miss
This is where the question comes up most often in our work. A homeowner books a solar install or a charger, the site inspection happens, and the board cannot host the new circuit or the protection it requires. The upgrade stops being optional and becomes part of the job.

What The Upgrade Actually Involves
Power comes off, the old enclosure is stripped out, and a new board goes in with individual protection on each circuit. Every circuit is then tested and labelled, so you know what each switch controls instead of flicking three of them to find the garage.
Two things worth knowing before you book. Reconnecting the service mains needs a Level 2 accredited provider, so ask whether your electrician holds that qualification or has to bring in a second contractor. And you should receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work when the job is done, which matters for your insurer and for any future sale. Most homes are finished inside a day.
Do I Need A New Switchboard If Nothing Has Gone Wrong Yet?
Age and load answer this one. If the house was built before the nineties and the board has never been touched, it was sized for a fraction of what your household now runs. Add a renovation, a second fridge, ducted air conditioning or a home office, and the gap widens quietly.
